The Paq bag
With traveling the world more available than ever, we made a bag ideal for life on the road. No matter where your adventures take you, picking the right bag is crucial.
After traveling halfway around the world and living solely out of a backpack for two months, we discovered something was missing. We designed a bag to optimize your travel experience, and make your next trip the best one yet.
Our story begins in 2010 with Paq bag founder, Matthew Jensen, sewing his very first bag on a1960s stewing machine. A sternum buckle made from a piece of ⅛” steel was the centerpiece of his new messenger bag. After only a few days of using the bag, Matthew realized the straps needed to be sewn in at an angle and that the angle changed when the bag was worn. He set out to find a buckle that would allow the straps to rotate while being worn. He came back empty handed, because it simply did not exist. Although this did not stop Matthew, he put his newly developed 3D design skills to the test and invented the very first rotating buckle. The original design has since been patented and perfected into a work of art capable of holding hundreds of pounds.
Fast forward to early 2016, Matthew is working to find means of production for his new buckle and unsuccessfully trying to sell the design to bag manufactures. Once again he realized something needed to change. He began designing a bag specifically for the rotating buckle and was back at the sewing machine. During this process, Matthew crossed paths with Alex Howard. Alex was working at an online outdoor retailer and understood the outdoor bag market. He fell in love with the rotating buckle, but the bags needed help. Matthew and Alex worked together to create a brand new versatile travel bag.
Refinement And Beyond
Alex put the first prototype to the test and embarked on a two month trip around Peru, living solely out of his Paqbag. He came back with experience and knowledge to improve the bag. While attending a trade show, Alex found the perfect fabric and a new sleek and stylish design was born. Matthew took this new design to a manufacture in Vietnam and two weeks later returned with a finished prototype. We have done the dirty work and now it’s your turn. Be one of the first to get your Paqbag, go sign up on the mailing list, and tell your friends to do the same. Once we have enough “interest” based on signups, we will go live on Kickstarter and begin selling bags.
Alex is a 23 year old living in the awesome town of San Luis Obispo. Originally from Santa Cruz, he's been on the central coast for five years and loves to surf, hike, backpack, and explore. After finishing his master's degrees at the University of Michigan, Matthew moved to San Luis Obispo, CA, and there began the Rotating Buckles company that started it all. He has been employed as a bicycle mechanic, he framed houses, and he was in the U.S. Navy Seabees. A deep love of the intersection between artistic expression and mechanical functionality is the driving force behind all of his endeavors.
